Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef - Review - Xbox

There are alot of Warhammer games released nowadays, and by alot I mean so many you would be crushed to death if the physical versions fell on you from 2021 and 2022 alone. I'm not sure if Games Workshop has some kind of student debt it's trying to pay off by licensing it's IP out for so many games but usually the released products we get tend to be very by-the-numbers and just OK games. Luckily for us though, developer Rogueside has brought us something a little different and I love it! For those of you who don't know, Warhammer 40,000 (or 40K for the cool kids out there), is a tabletop miniatures wargame from Games Workshop that has been filling tables at friendly local game stores since 1987. It's set in the distant future and sees humans and a variety of alien races facing off in epic battles. It also features a host of extremely detailed miniature figures that you have to build and paint, and if you have skill and patience - they turn out looking phenomenal! Unfortunately I have neither, so i'm glad there are video games for me to enjoy instead!

The story focuses on The Orks, a savage race commonly known as the ‘Green Tide’, as they sweep across the stars with unrivalled violence in frenzied crusades known as a Waaagh! They are savage, brutal and crude, outnumbering all other races that lay in their path of destruction. You will become the spearhead of an Ork invasion as you bash, smash and shoot your way through the hive city of Luteus Prime on a mission to retrieve your hair squig and claim vengeance on your warlord! And just maybe become the warboss of a WAAAGH! The game is a 2D platformer shooter with a cartoony art style that reminds me early 360 shooters like Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers mixed with run and gun classic Metal Slug. There are four different Ork character classes to choose from with different abilities, as well as a large amount of guns to rain destruction down on your enemies! Level design is great with multiple routes you can take as well as large boss battles you need to fight your way past. The game has a huge focus on co-op multiplayer, with local and online drop-in and out for upto 4 players at once! On top of the campaign mode there are also multiple PVP modes to play as well. The game controls feel smooth and tight when playing, the hand drawn art style is a standout with crisp animations, tons of details and plenty of explosions! The audio in the game is a metal fest filled with loud, rocking tracks blasting through the levels. There is also some very humorous voice acting that perfectly fits the Orkness of it all.

Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood, & Teef is a extremely fun game to play alone or with friends. It's cartoony graphics look fantastic and really emphasize the Ork-ness of the whole game, coupled with a ton of humour and a crazy soundtrack make this a brilliant breath of fresh air for Warhammer based video games! That being said it's far from perfect, it had too many loading screens and the occasional bug that spoilt the fun we were having, but luckily the overall experience was a good one. If you're a Warhammer 40k fan or just a 2D shooter fan then you should definitely give this one a try! TOTAL SCORE: 8/10

Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood & Teef was released onto the Xbox store on the 25th October 2022. It's playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles and is priced at £16.99. You can purchase the game HERE. The game is also available on other platforms.
