The original Resident Evil movie is underrated

March 15th marked 21 years since the original Resident Evil movie adaption was released onto our screens! I feel its completely underrated!

The Resident Evil movie franchise has become a staple in the horror genre, with six installments released since the first film's debut in 2002. While the series as a whole has been commercially successful, the original film often gets overlooked or dismissed as a mediocre adaptation. However, there are several reasons why the original Resident Evil movie was actually underrated.

First and foremost, it's essential to understand that the film was not intended to be a direct adaptation of the video game series. Instead, it served as a prequel to the first game, introducing a new character named Alice (played by Milla Jovovich) and exploring the origins of the T-virus outbreak that leads to the events of the game. While some fans of the game series may have been disappointed by this departure, it allowed the filmmakers to create a fresh story that was still rooted in the Resident Evil universe.

The film's visuals are also noteworthy, with a stark, industrial aesthetic that perfectly captures the feeling of being trapped in an underground research facility. The use of practical effects, such as the makeup and prosthetics used for the zombies, adds to the film's authenticity and makes the horror elements all the more effective. Director Paul W.S. Anderson also expertly builds tension throughout the film, gradually ramping up the stakes until the explosive finale.

Perhaps most importantly, the film was a game-changer for female action heroes. Milla Jovovich's portrayal of Alice is fierce and unapologetic, showcasing her physical abilities and strategic thinking as she fights to survive against hordes of zombies and mutated monsters. Her character is not sexualized or objectified in any way, which was a refreshing change of pace from other action movies of the time. Jovovich's performance paved the way for other female-led action franchises like The Hunger Games and Atomic Blonde.

In addition to Jovovich, the film's cast is stacked with talented actors who deliver strong performances. Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Rain, is particularly impressive in her portrayal of a tough-as-nails commando who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. The chemistry between the characters feels genuine, adding an emotional weight to the film that is often missing from other horror movies.

Overall, the original Resident Evil movie may not have been a faithful adaptation of the video game series, but it was still a compelling horror film with strong performances, stunning visuals, and a groundbreaking female lead. It's time to give this underrated gem the respect it deserves.
