The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation is a first-person horror game developed by Softstar Entertainment Inc and published by Eastasiasoft Ltd. It was released on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on the 30th August 2023.
The game is based on a Taiwanese urban legend about a cursed bridge at Tung Hu University. According to the legend, if you climb the 13 steps of the bridge at midnight, a 14th step will appear and lead you to the afterlife. In the game, you play as a student at Tung Hu University who decides to investigate the bridge curse. The game features a mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, and stealth.
The story of The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation begins with a group of students at Tung Hu University who decide to investigate the bridge curse. They climb the 13 steps of the bridge at midnight, and the 14th step appears. However, when they reach the top of the stairs, they find themselves trapped in a nightmarish world. The students are separated, and each of them must find their own way to survive. They explore the abandoned university campus and its surrounding areas, encountering a variety of ghosts and other supernatural creatures along the way.
As the students explore, they learn more about the history of the bridge curse. They discover that the curse was placed on the bridge by the ghost of a young woman who was betrayed by her lover. The woman's lover promised to meet her on the bridge at midnight, but he never showed up. The woman was so heartbroken that she jumped to her death. The students also learn that there is a way to break the curse, but it is dangerous. They must find a way to confront the ghost of the young woman and convince her to forgive her lover.
Graphics:
The environments are well-detailed. The abandoned university campus and its surrounding areas look realistic and creepy.
The atmosphere is creepy. The game uses lighting and shadows effectively to create a sense of suspense and dread.
The character models are a bit stiff and the animations are a bit choppy. This is not a major issue, but it can be noticeable at times.
Audio:
The soundtrack is haunting and atmospheric. It sets the mood perfectly for the game's creepy atmosphere.
The sound effects are well-done. The sound of the ghosts and other supernatural creatures is particularly chilling.
The game features full English voice acting, which is generally good. The voice actors deliver their lines convincingly enough, which is much more than I was honestly expecting.
The length of The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation depends on your playstyle. If you focus on the main story, you can complete the game in around 4-5 hours. However, if you want to explore all of the areas and find all of the collectibles, it can take you up to 7-8 hours to complete the game. To progress the story you will mainly be scouring the various environments looking for specific key items which are needed. There are also various puzzle segments you will need to complete, all this may sound abit mundane in terms of actual gameplay, however you will need to do these tasks while constantly being hunted by killer ghosts. There are multiple sections in the game where you will be being chased by these apparitions and will need to run away and find a place to hide. They do get a little frustrating at times and happen way too often for my liking, but they definitely increase the overall stakes!
Pros:
Good story
Creepy atmosphere
Solid gameplay
Full English voice acting
Cons:
Repetitive gameplay
Frustrating chase sequences
Decent graphics, but not outstanding
Stiff character models and choppy animations
The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation is a solid horror game with a good story, creepy atmosphere, and solid gameplay. Fans of the genre will enjoy it, but those looking for something innovative or outstanding may be disappointed.
