Thalassa: The Edge of the Abyss - Exploring the Depths

Hey gamers, I'm ahdee and welcome to XPN Gaming. If you're a fan of narrative based games then let me tell you about Thalassa: The Edge of the Abyss. In Thalassa, you'll take on the mystery of the sunken S.S. Thalassa, while exploring the ship itself to find clues of what happened onboard. Let's dive in!

In Thalassa, you play as a diver named Cam. Your crew is tasked with finding a sunken ship called the St. Catherine, a mission led by Isabel Greenwood. St. Catherine holds something valuable to Isabel’s family, a statue of the sea goddess Thalassa. Just as your team finds the statue, an unfortunate accident occurs. The crane lifting the statue out of the sea breaks and your dive partner, Alex, is crushed under the wreckage, trapped on the seafloor. As you do your best to try to free her, her suit fills with water and she sadly passes.

Now traumatized and grieving the loss of your dive partner, you take a leave from the Thalassa only to be called back because she has sunk. You are tasked with finding the wreckage of the Thalassa and solving how the ship sank, and what happened to everyone on board. Uncover the secrets of the crew, search hidden areas of the wrecked ship, and put together the pieces of the puzzle of the S.S Thalassa.

Now everything I mentioned in the story is just the prologue of the game, of course I wouldn’t want to spoil the story for any of you. The main gameplay loop of Thalassa involves exploring areas of the sunken ship, finding any information you can. As you explore further into the ship, you unravel the story of how the ship sank. That’s not all you learn during your time on the Thalassa, you go through the lives of the crew and see that not everything was sunshine and rainbows on board.

When you explore the Thalassa, any clues you find are collected for you to examine and piece together. While the main story revolves just around finding out how the Thalassa sank, there are other stories you can explore while on board. In total the Thalassa provides you with 25 full mysteries to solve, each revolving around members of the crew and those who were aboard the ship. Some of which go from the love lives of the crew to secretive voice recordings.

There is always something to be found out and everything is connected.

Thalassa does an amazing job of creating an eerie, lonely environment as you are underwater on a sunken ship. When I first got into the ship I felt anxious like something would pop out at me at any moment. It definitely takes time to get used to your surroundings and being completely alone, as you do lose contact with your guide early on into the story. You are alone with your thoughts and traumas.

When you are first on the ship in the prologue you can see the grandiose nature of the interior. When exploring the Thalassa after she’s sunk, you can see all the destruction that occurs from the sinking. I personally love the detail in the sunken portion where the local fish have started to explore with you.

While games like this aren’t my personal favorite, I’m glad I got to spend time on the Thalassa. Learning the lives of those on board, discovering what everyone was really up to while still trying to process the loss of someone close to you. The eerie environment of being underwater alone, yet feeling full of life as if no one ever left. If I didn’t nearly 100% the game on my first play through then I would definitely go back through to complete each mystery. Thalassa: The Edge of the Abyss does a wonderful job of building its world and story. This is a must play for fans of mystery solving and full narrative games.
