If you watch any of our podcast episodes, you will know how much I love classic Resident Evil video games. Whilst the main gameplay found within them is surviving zombie outbreaks, a majorly important section of the gameplay involves hiding in a safe room, clear from the approaching undead, sorting through your inventory and storage. While you lose yourself in the beautifully, haunting music - you end up trying to sort your items in an almost Tetris-like fashion to ensure you can carry everything you need for the tasks ahead. This is the section that developer Fractal Projects and publisher Ratalaika Games have focused their new game solely on. Using the Resident Evil 4 attache case as a base, they have crafted a fully fledged puzzle game. This short puzzle game features 40 different levels to work your way through that feel like they have been copy-pasted from the Capcom classic.
The game features a progressive difficulty kerb as you work through the levels. Where in the earlier levels you are simply trying to jigsaw arrange items into a variety of misshapen spaces, as you get further you will need to combine healing items and heal yourself, reload weapons and craft ammo to ensure you fit everything perfectly. While some of the levels may seem confusing, you're able to restart the level at any time to try a different combination - but veteran Resident Evil players will probably feel much more at home from the get go. Save Room really excels in terms of graphics and audio. It's a fantastic homage and is instantly recognisable to survival horror fans with it's grungy colours. The background music is great and really gives you that relaxing, menacing vibe that the classic save room tracks provide.
Save Room is a fun love letter to classic Resident Evil games before it. Although it's runtime is pretty short, it's an enjoyable puzzle game to waste a couple of hours on - and if your an achievement hunter it's a rather straight forward and easy 1000g to add to your tally! At a low price it's well worth checking out if you're a horror or puzzle fan! TOTAL SCORE: 7.5/10
Save Room will be released onto the Xbox Store on November 11th 2022 and will be priced at $4.99. The game is also available on other consoles and PC. A copy of the game was provided for this review. A big thanks for that.
