Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition - Review - Xbox

In the realm of first-person shooters, there exists a treasure trove of classics that have shaped the genre we know and love today. One such gem that often finds itself overshadowed by its contemporaries is "Rise of the Triad." Originally released in 1995, this cult classic has made a triumphant return in the form of a remaster and it's a rollercoaster ride through nostalgia.

Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is a remaster of the classic 1995 first-person shooter game, Rise of the Triad. It was developed by Nightdive Studios and published by Apogee Entertainment and New Blood Interactive. The game was released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S on the 29th September 2023.

The remaster features updated visuals, including high-resolution textures and improved lighting, as well as support for modern controllers and widescreen displays. While the Ludicrous Edition doesn't push the boundaries of modern graphics, it stays true to the original game's retro aesthetic. The pixel art style is vibrant and nostalgic, with just enough modern enhancements to make it visually appealing. It's a fitting tribute to the classic era of FPS gaming. Audio wise you can create any Rise of the Triad experience with multiple iterations of the classic original soundscape, or rock out to the heavy metal 2013 reboot soundtrack.

The Ludicrous Edition retains the core gameplay that fans of the series love. It's a first-person shooter that throws players into a whirlwind of chaotic gunfights, bizarre weapons, and relentless enemies. The Ludicrous Edition takes this to the extreme, piling on even more outrageous weapons, power-ups, and enemies. It's a frenetic, high-octane experience that keeps your adrenaline pumping from start to finish.

Rise of the Triad is a fast-paced and action-packed FPS game that is known for its over-the-top humor and violence. It doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest. The humor is often crude, and the story is a thin thread meant to string together the chaos. If you're looking for a deep narrative, you won't find it here. However, if you appreciate absurd humor and pop culture references, you'll have a good laugh along the way. The Ludicrous Edition introduces new levels that are as wacky and unpredictable as the rest of the game (including the original 4 full campaign modes and expansion packs) as well as allowing you to explore never-before-seen content from previously-lost beta builds. From sprawling, labyrinthine mazes to gravity-defying spaces, the levels are designed to challenge your wits and reflexes. They can be frustrating at times, but the satisfaction of conquering them is worth the effort.

One of the standout features of the Ludicrous Edition is the sheer variety of weapons and power-ups. From the explosive Excalibat to the ludicrously powerful Drunk Missile, you'll find yourself constantly surprised by the arsenal at your disposal. Power-ups range from the useful (invincibility) to the downright insane (shooting explosive dogs). Experimentation is key, and finding the perfect combination for each situation is part of the fun.

Pros:

  • Updated visuals with high-resolution textures and improved lighting

  • Support for modern controllers and widescreen displays

  • Variety of cheats and modifiers

  • Fast-paced and action-packed gameplay

  • Over-the-top humor and violence

  • Variety of unique weapons and power-ups

  • Memorable cast of characters

  • Mouse and keyboard support on Xbox

Cons:

  • Level design can be repetitive at times

  • Game can be difficult at times, especially on higher difficulty settings

  • Some of the game's humor may not appeal to everyone

  • Lacks the multiplayer and co-op found in the PC versions of the game

The Ludicrous Edition of Rise of the Triad is an excellent remaster of a classic FPS game. The game's updated visuals and new features make it a must-play for fans of the original game and newcomers alike. Rise of the Triad Ludicrous Edition is an unapologetically wild and over-the-top experience that stays true to its roots. It's not for everyone, as its humor and gameplay style are an acquired taste, but for fans of classic, fast-paced shooters who appreciate a healthy dose of insanity, it's a must-play. If you're ready to embrace the madness, strap in and get ready for a ludicrous ride through gaming's history.

Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition was released onto the Xbox store on the 29th September 2023. The game is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S consoles. The game is priced at £16.74 and can be purchased HERE. A copy of the game was provided for this review. A huge thanks for that!
