Full Throttle is a classic point and click style adventure game that was originally released by LucasArts way back in 1995 on PC. On Oct 29 2020 with Double Fine Productions joining the Xbox Game Studios line up this classic has been given a polish and a new lease of life on Xbox One with Full Throttle Remastered. This is the exact same game as the original in terms of content, but it now comes with improved graphics, sounds, controls and even developer commentary if that's something you are interested in!
Now I must confess I don't normally enjoy point and click style games on console, to me they are meant to be played on PC with the ease of clicking and moving the mouse around unhindered compared to the more clunky selection/menu options the console ports usually provide but because the game was on Xbox Game Pass and I wanted to play through the Double Fine games I've missed I thought I would give it a whirl along with the Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango Remasters.
I don't want to give too much away as it will spoil the game but the plot of the game sees you playing as Ben, the leader of the motorcycle gang “The Polecats”. You are framed for murder and you play through the game trying to clear your name, save the girl and take revenge on the evil businessman who is behind everything.
When booting up the game for the first time it's honestly hard not to notice just how good it looks. The improved graphics are sharp and colourful and give a new view when compared to the original graphics. The Mad Max dystopian looking world really pops from the screen. If you don't believe me you can compare yourself as you are able to switch between classic and remastered graphics in game at a touch of a button!
The other thing you will notice is the stellar voice cast this game has. Notably Kath Soucie (Lola Bunny from Looney Toons, Phil And Lil in Rugrats), Bill Farmer (Goofy), Maurice LaMarche (Brain in Animaniacs, The Real Ghostbusters) and topped off with a great performance by Mark Hamill as the main antagonist Adrian Ripburger. The voice acting is fantastic and the fact they used the original recordings instead of rerecording them for the remaster shows just how good they are!
If you have ever played a game like The Secret of Monkey Island then you will totally understand how this game plays, you explore various areas, interacting with a host of characters and items in a bid to progress through the storyline and puzzles. It can sometimes be a bit slow paced and plodding when trying to find the correct item/dialogue needed but for some of the funny dialogue and Easter egg references it's definitely worth it. One thing that this game adds compared to some of the other games is this also includes motorbike exploration/combat which adds a nice bit of variety.
Overall the game can take around 8 hours to complete if you spend time interacting and taking everything in which is shorter than most of the Classic Point and click style games that Double Fine have remastered, however I feel this works in the games favour and helps keep the action and pace moving forwards all the time as if its some kind of interactive action movie. My only complaints are the niggling control issues that stem from the conversion to having to play using a controller. The amount of times I would turn or got to the wrong section/click the wrong item because of this did annoy me but after a while you find yourself working around it, I just wish they had added mouse/keyboard support since the Xbox One can actually use them. I also found a few of the sections a bit repetitive if you’re not 100% sure what you’re meant to be doing, it adds to a lot of back and forth which gets a bit tedious but that is just the style of the game. Overall Full Throttle Remastered is a pretty smooth ride!
