Mugen Souls Z - Review - Nintendo Switch

Mugen Souls Z is a turn-based JRPG developed by Compile Heart and published by Eastasiasoft. It was originally released for the PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2013, and was ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2023. The game is a sequel to Mugen Souls, but it is not necessary to have played the first game in order to enjoy this one thankfully! This updated version of Mugen Souls Z includes all prior extras while faithfully adapting the content of the Japanese original, making it the definitive way to experience this cult classic JRPG!

In Mugen Souls Z, players embark on a wild and wacky adventure alongside Chou-Chou, a self-proclaimed Undisputed God who seeks to conquer the universe. Chou-Chou, accompanied by her loyal servant Ryuto, sets out to explore the twelve Zodiac worlds, determined to subjugate them all and make everyone her peon.

Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they encounter Syrma, an airheaded Ultimate God who accidentally shrinks Chou-Chou down to the size of a fairy. Now, the once-mighty Chou-Chou must rely on Syrma's powers to restore her former self and continue her quest for universal domination.

As they travel through the Zodiac worlds, Chou-Chou and Syrma encounter a cast of eccentric characters, each with their own unique personalities and motivations. They face off against rival gods, engage in hilarious dialogues, and uncover the secrets of the universe.

The story of Mugen Souls Z is filled with over-the-top humor, absurd situations, and plenty of fanservice. It's a lighthearted and comedic take on the JRPG genre, with a focus on character interactions and ridiculous plot twists.

Alongside the main story, players can explore side quests, engage in character customization, and delve into the intricate combat system, which involves transforming enemies into peons for strategic advantages.

Mugen Souls Z is a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, embracing its eccentricities and delivering a fun-filled adventure for those who enjoy quirky characters, unconventional storylines, and plenty of laughs along the way.

The Nintendo Switch port of Mugen Souls Z features a number of additions and improvements over the PlayStation 3 version. Here is a list of some of the most notable ones:

  • Performance improvements: The Switch port runs more smoothly than the PlayStation 3 version, and it also features shorter loading times.

Mugen Souls Z features a turn-based combat system that is both simple and strategic. Players can move their characters around the battlefield and use a variety of skills and attacks to defeat their enemies. One of the unique features of the combat system is the ability to convert enemies into "peons." Peons can then be used to fight for you or to be sacrificed for powerful attacks.

The game also features a deep customization system that allows players to create their own unique characters. Players can choose from a variety of different races, classes, and skills. They can also equip their characters with a variety of different weapons and armor.
