Finn-ish the Puzzle Before It Finn-ishes You

Have you ever just wanted to take a quick break to a serene log cabin in the woods? Away from phones and intrusive noises that you might find in a busy city, with a sauna that you can unwind and relax in? Finnish Cottage 8 offers that GREAT retreat experience but not all is as it seems at first glance or is it?

Trapped in a time loop... or just booting up Windows 98?

I was lucky enough to be gifted a cabin key by Savukivi Games and I was ready for my idyllic getaway to begin. I walk up to my cabin hoping to get in drop my bags and just take in all the peace and quiet, but the minute I enter I am met with an unfamiliar voice?

Did I have the right cabin?

I froze for a minute to listen carefully but I don't understand what the voice is saying, I realize it's another language! Then it's as if the voice could see me and switches to English explaining that I have stumbled into a cabin that mysteriously traps people in a loop and that in order for me to escape I need to analyze the cabin for any anomalies!

Well I don't think that was mentioned in the brochure - maybe I missed the T's & C's in the fine print!

There is no turning back now....literally because if I keep trying to leave by the door I entered, I re-enter over and over again. I guess it's time to roll my sleeves up and get to investigating.

The game starts you off showing you the cabin in its original state so that you have a moment to explore and mentally document what you THINK are the important details. I have played a few memory games in the past and went in feeling quite confident I could escape in no time at all, this was going to be a breeze!

It was NOT a breeze.

I quickly realized this was not as straightforward as making a checklist of the decor. I started questioning myself and my ability to recall details.

Was that smoke detector always there?

How many candles did I see in the window?

Is that cushion facing the right direction?

Don’t get me wrong, some anomalies are glaringly obvious, and at times, it almost felt like the game knew when I was struggling and threw me a bone (or a foot - yes, really). But others? They’re so subtle they had me tearing the cabin apart in frustration. The balance of difficulty is fantastic - it’s challenging but never unfair.

Even though the estimated playtime is between 30-60 minutes, I’ve spent over three hours searching for ALL the anomalies (not even counting my time in the demo), and I still haven’t escaped. But that won’t stop me. I’m determined to uncover every anomaly and finally break free from this cursed cabin.

Until then… I’ll be seeing that front door again. And again. And again.

So my advice? Stay alert, stay aware, and maybe - just maybe - you'll get to enjoy the sauna after all!

For a game that offers plenty of content for such a small price tag, I’m giving Finnish Cottage 8 a 5/5 - one point for gameplay, one for atmosphere, and three for the number of times I screamed, “Wait… was that always there?!”
