Black Site Studios is back with their critically acclaimed 2020 board game, Don't Look Back, now launching a new Gamefound campaign.

This new campaign, which reached its funding goal in just three hours, is shaping up to be a fantastic entry point for both new players and veterans alike.

The new Core Box has been updated with additional content, including:

  • Quick Start Rules for easier onboarding,

  • Full-color card terrain and a mat to represent Camp Black Pine,

  • New Character Cards, Plot Cards, and Killer Visages,

  • Dice,

  • PVC miniatures of survivors,

  • And the newest killer: The Beaumont Man!

The included terrain is fairly flat aside from the cabin, but it adds enough atmosphere to immerse players in the horror setting.

VHS Expansions?

Black Site Studios is also offering most of their Original VHS Expansions (yes, literally housed in authentic VHS cases—this alone has me obsessed with this game). These expansions introduce new survivors, plots, items, locations, and killers, ranging from ghosts and shark monsters to clowns and other retro horror nightmares.

One of the many VHS Expansions I absolutely need to play with!

What is Don't Look Back Exactly?

At its core, Don't Look Back is a solo/cooperative tabletop miniatures game of retro survival horror, where players take on the roles of survivors trying to complete an objective while evading a relentless slasher killer.

The game runs on a simple D20 dice mechanic designed for fast-paced resolution of actions, keeping the tension high and the gameplay moving quickly.

The horror theming is absolutely spot-on, and the community seem to agree that the game is a success, as can be seen by the 8.9/10 community rating on BoardGameGeek.

The theming is absolutely perfect and it players have thoroughly enjoyed the experience as the 8.9 player rating on BoardGameGeek can attest!

I'm a survivor!

Players control a group of four characters that will have to pursue a specific objective set by the plot you select (there are a bunch of them included in the core box).

Each character has their own card with details on what they carry with them, their special skills and overall statistics needed for the many tests they will have to go through during the game.

"I think I saw something move over there..."

The non-player controlled killer will always be lurking and ready to attack survivors as you try to complete your objectives.

When setting up a plot, you'll choose a Killer and assign them a VisageVisage—a card that defines their special abilities, attacks, and eerie effects. You’ll also draw a random M.O. (modus operandi) and two random Traits.

This randomized setup gives the game incredible replayability, ensuring every session feels fresh and unpredictable. Combined with free-form movement using standard miniature game rulers (akin to Warhammer and other skirmish games), no two playthroughs will ever be identical.

The Core Box + the new content is really appealing for newcomers given how much replayability you can already get for such a low price point.

A cool detail: Parts of the game are produced locally in Texas, and new batches are typically only made when new content is released. If you’re interested, now’s the time to jump in—Don't Look back is probably the single best retro slasher horror miniature game you can play.
