Publisher All in! Games and female-led developer Naraven Games announced their debut commercial title, Backfirewall_, is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch platform following later this year. Backfirewall_ is a unique and quirky puzzle game that takes the player on a tragicomic adventure with the sassy self-aware Operating System, OS9, facing replacement by the far-better-optimized OS10. The game depicts the torment of programs whose code is regularly erased and replaced in the cause of technological progress. In this case OS9’s goal is simple: stop the phone from updating, and stay alive.
Taking on the role of the Update Assistant inside the smartphone's inner workings, players will explore a weird and wonderful technological setting, brimming with life, telltale conversations, and quirky characters. Players maneuver through an amazing nano-journey where they can manipulate their surroundings to solve puzzles, hunt down bugs, and use cheat-codes in an attempt to disrupt the update.
“We wanted to create a fun and wholesome narrative-driven adventure game where the social and technological reliances we place on our personal digital devices was the focus,” said Julia Jean, Creative Director at Naraven Games. “Elevated by some great puzzles and voice acting, Backfirewall_ delivers a unique perspective on our recurring relationship to our smartphones.”
Backfirewall_ launches today with a 10% launch discount available for 10 days on Steam and Xbox store fronts and is priced $14.99 / €14.99 / £11.49. The game is also now available on PlayStation and is soon coming to Epic and Humble Bundle.
