Alien RPG - Core Rulebook: In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream.

Alien Core Rulebook front cover

Hello fellow gamers, Racula here and welcome to XPN Gaming.

Who here likes and plays Table Top RPG's, such as Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer Age of Sigmar and 40,000?

Now, has any one heard of a company known as Free League Publishing and what they do?

No? Well then, allow me to enlighten you and get to know about them a bit more.

Free League Publishing is a game studio and publisher dedicated to speculative fiction, based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Voted Fan Favorite Publisher at the ENNIES in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024, Free League has published a wide range of award-winning tabletop roleplaying games and acclaimed art books, set in strange and wondrous worlds.

So when I read up that Free League do the official Alien rpg, I got really excited. I love table top rpgs and as a young child, I have always loved the Alien films, whether they are good or bad, it does not matter to me, I just purely love the Xenomorphs.

The Setting for Alien rpg

The year is 2183, little more then three years since the destruction of Hadley's Hope colony on LV426, the disappearance of the USS Sulaco and the closing of the prison and lead works on Fiorina 161.

The loss of the Sulaco's Colonial Marine unit, along with these Weyland Yutani sponsored outposts and the implications of corporate foul play stemming these incidents, have created an air of distrust between the company and the United Americans.

To add fuel to the fire, conflicts between the rival sectors of space have increased exponentially in the past five years.

While unconfirmed, many believe that Hadley's Hope, was a test site for one of Weyland Yutani's bioweapons and that an enemy state sent a warship to nuke it from orbit.

Others believe that the company is working with a rogue nation, to assume control of the colonies on the frontier.

In film terms, Alien rpg is set after the original three Alien films, so no resurrection in this, which means no Ripley to save the day.

What does the Alien rpg Core Rulebook contain?

The Alien rpg core rulebook, is a beautifully illustrated 392 pages, of full colour and detailed, hardcover/PDF book. Both presenting the world of Alien in the year 2183 and a fast and effective ruleset, designed specifically to enhance the experience.

It has thirteen chapters in total, each one categorized for specific parts everyone will need to play this game.

I know there's a lot to read in this book, but if you're a bit of a book worm and also a tabletop rpg fanatic, then this should be easy enough to read and understand.

Playing campaigns for Alien rpg.

So Alien rpg has two different types of campaigns to chose from:

Campaign Play: is designed for longer continuous play with the same cast of characters, created by players, over several game sessions. Pretty much like a general D&D game play.

The narrative of the game is to a higher degree, controlled by the GM and the players themselves. You decide where to go and what to do, based on who your characters are and what they want.

Cinematic Play: Designed to be played in a single session, a cinematic scenario emulates the dramatic arc of an Alien film. This play emphasizes high stakes, also fast and brutal play.

Conflict between characters is likely and you are not all expected to survive. To be honest, most of the player's characters might not live to see the end of the scenario.

It's exciting to know that you can play a scenario set within the Alien films, what the outcome will be is down to how the players think and act. In all honesty, I'm looking forward to giving this ago, to not only to play as GM, but to create my own character, or cinematic character and join in with the horrors that await in both campaigns, with some of my fellow friends.

Alien The Roleplaying Game - Core Rulebook, along with both cinematic and campaigns books, is available now in the Free League Publishing webshop and at retailers worldwide, in PDF format at DriveThruRPG and as a VTT module on Foundry, Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds. Downloads for Alien rpg including character sheets, maps, characters and wallpapers are also available to download for free on the Free League Publishing webshop.

Thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to take a moment to read this, your support is always appreciated and means a lot to me. If you have enjoyed this, make sure to check out other reviews and news on the XPN Gaming website.
